Time to start the next batch of audiobooks I have lined up. The Murderbot Diaries is something that has only just caught my attention because of the up and coming tv shows, but the book series started in 2017. Another new to me is The Deluge by Stephen Markley, out in 2023, but gets very good reviews. The rest in the list have been around my collection for a while…

Murderbot Diaries, 1 – All Systems Red
by Martha Wells.
A scientific team on an alien planet is attacked by a giant creature, and their cyborg protector, a SecUnit that secretly calls itself Murderbot, saves them. Though designed for combat, Murderbot prefers watching soap operas and has secretly overridden its human control module. When the team discovers missing data and the slaughter of another expedition (DeltFall), they realize a third, hostile group (GrayCris) is trying to eliminate all other parties. After surviving multiple attacks and uncovering a sabotage plot, the team and Murderbot thwart GrayCris’s plan. Despite being offered freedom under Dr. Mensah’s care, Murderbot chooses independence and escapes on a cargo ship.

Murderbot Diaries, 2 – Artificial Condition
by Martha Wells.
Murderbot travels to the site of its original malfunction to uncover the truth about the incident. It befriends a sarcastic AI research transport it nicknames ART, who helps it upgrade its body and remove vulnerabilities. To access the RaviHyral facility, Murderbot poses as a security consultant for scientists confronting their former employer, Tlacey Excavations, over stolen research. After surviving sabotage and assassination attempts, Murderbot learns the massacre it was involved in was caused by malware sent to sabotage the facility.
A ComfortUnit—a cyborg designed for companionship—helps Murderbot expose Tlacey. When a scientist, Tapan, is kidnapped, Murderbot rescues her, aided by ART’s earlier modifications that make combat overrides ineffective. Tlacey is killed, Tapan recovers, and Murderbot grants the ComfortUnit freedom before setting off alone once again.

Murderbot Diaries, 3 – Rogue Protocol
by Martha Wells.
Murderbot infiltrates an abandoned GrayCris terraforming facility to uncover evidence of the company’s criminal activities. It befriends a naive humanoid bot named Miki to help conceal its presence and observes a human team assessing the site. When they’re attacked and a researcher is taken hostage, Murderbot reveals itself and pretends to be working for a fictional “Security Consultant Rin.”
While navigating distrust from the team’s security personnel, Wilken and Gerth, Murderbot leads a successful rescue. It later discovers Wilken is trying to kill one of the researchers, Don Abene, and stops him by hacking his armor. Murderbot deduces that both security guards are working for GrayCris and attempting to destroy the facility to cover up evidence.
In a final confrontation, Murderbot thwarts their plan and saves the team, though Miki is destroyed in the process. Determined to stop GrayCris, Murderbot decides to personally deliver the evidence to Dr. Mensah.

Murderbot Diaries, 4 – Exit Strategy
by Martha Wells.
Murderbot arrives at HaveRatton Station only to find itself the target of a security ambush. Evading capture, it learns that Dr. Mensah has been kidnapped by GrayCris, accused of corporate espionage, and held at a heavily fortified corporate hub. Feeling responsible for Mensah’s endangerment, Murderbot reunites with her former team to stage a fake ransom exchange and rescue her.
The plan works—Mensah escapes while Murderbot fights off her captors. During their getaway, they’re attacked by a Palisade security ship that tries to take control of their systems with a virus. Murderbot and the ship’s bot pilot manage to contain the virus, jettison the infected shuttle, and destroy the enemy ships. Severely damaged, Murderbot collapses.
At Preservation Station, Murderbot begins recovery. The team offers it support and invites it to join their next expedition. With the freedom to choose its future and potential job offers—including one from a previous client—Murderbot feels satisfied knowing it now has options.

Murderbot Diaries, 5 – Network Effect
by Martha Wells.
Murderbot joins a research expedition led by Dr. Mensah’s team, including her daughter Amena. Their ship is attacked, and Murderbot and Amena are captured by a hostile vessel—one that turns out to be the former ship of ART, Murderbot’s AI friend. As the rest of the team escapes, Murderbot protects the captives and fights off the attackers. With the help of a pre-set code, ART is reactivated, revealing it had orchestrated the situation, believing Murderbot was the only one capable of defeating the invaders.
Frustrated with ART for risking its human companions, Murderbot is dragged into a new mission: investigating the fate of the transport’s missing crew. On a contaminated colony planet, the team discovers the colonists are infected and split into factions, some under alien hive mind control. After being captured, Murderbot is rescued thanks to ART’s missile threat, a liberated SecUnit, and a software clone of itself. With the crisis resolved, Murderbot returns to Preservation—but chooses to continue traveling with ART on its next adventure.

Murderbot Diaries, 6 – Fugitive Telemetry
by Martha Wells.
While staying on Preservation Station, Murderbot is reluctantly recruited by Dr. Mensah to investigate a murder. Due to restrictions placed by Security Officer Indah, Murderbot must initially operate without hacking the station systems. Using traditional detective work and help from a friendly hostel bot, it locates a suspicious transport and discovers signs of a crime. Teaming up with Special Investigator Aylen, Murderbot rescues them from a hostile encounter and uncovers a refugee-smuggling operation involving slaves from the planet BreharWallHan.
After proving its usefulness, Murderbot gains access to station security systems and locates a group of refugees trapped in a low-oxygen storage module. It launches a daring space rescue using an old emergency dinghy, saving some of the group before taking down bounty hunters who planned to murder the rest. Surprisingly, one of the “SecUnits” helping the hunters is actually a human in stolen armor.
Back at the station, after narrowly surviving a crane “accident,” Murderbot identifies the real traitor: Balin, a seemingly friendly Port Authority bot, is actually a hidden CombatBot under corporate control. A fierce battle ensues, ending only when Murderbot is backed up by a network of non-combat bots from the station who rally to its side, forcing Balin to shut down.
With the case closed, Indah offers Murderbot payment and future consulting work. Murderbot agrees—so long as the jobs stay “really weird.”

Murderbot Diaries, 7 – System Collapse
by Martha Wells.
After Network Effect, a Barish-Estranza exploratory crew—led by the returning Supervisor Leonide—arrives on the scene with their own SecUnits, clashing with Murderbot, ART’s crew, and the Preservation humans. Their agendas diverge: Barish-Estranza wants to secure corporate claims, while Preservation aims to protect the autonomy of a newly discovered separatist colony.
Murderbot taps into the colony’s ancient computer infrastructure, helping its crew build diplomatic ties. A strategic media event is organized to sway public opinion and expose corporate overreach. The internal strife within the Barish-Estranza team reaches a head when Leonide survives an assassination attempt and switches allegiance, assisting the Murderbot crew in negotiations and tactical planning.
Amidst all this, Murderbot experiences psychological strain from an unexplained incident—an echo of trauma from past experiences. It begins to recognize the toll taken on its mental systems, manifesting as panic-attack analogues and intrusive errors in its internal narration. For the first time, Murderbot openly acknowledges a need for recovery and healing.
Ultimately, Barish-Estranza withdraws its claim, and Preservation secures scientific access to the alien artifacts. Talks continue among the colonist factions as they chart their future. Murderbot, still not ready to stay put, opts to keep traveling with ART, continuing its journey of reluctant growth and self-discovery.

Star Wars∶ Tempest Breaker
by Cavan Scott.
The Jedi reluctantly team up with the nefarious Lourna Dee in this all-new Star Wars audiobook original, narrated by a full cast.
Lourna Dee is not a villain. She’s not a hero. She’s a survivor. The former Tempest Runner, wanted by both her Nihil allies and the Republic, has evaded imprisonment and death from both groups more times than she can count. But even Lourna cannot outrun the mysterious blight that devours everything wherever it appears. And Marchion Ro, the Eye of the Nihil, has announced that only he knows the secret to stopping it.
Desperate, the Republic and Jedi turn to Lourna with an offer: help the Jedi stop the blight, and in return, Lourna will have a clean slate and the chance to decide her own future.
Teamed with Avar Kriss and Keeve Trennis, the same Jedi who once hunted her, Lourna leads the search for the Nihil’s chief scientist, Baron Boolan, the only being who may have answers to the mystery of the blight, as well as Marchion Ro’s true plans.
Lourna weighs the Republic’s offer of true freedom against her own instincts for survival as her team heads deeper into Nihil territory, straight toward the very dangers Lourna has worked for so long to elude. Determined to raise this child together, Mulder and Scully struggle to find meaning away from the X-Files as they navigate the uncertain waters of their relationship. Then the FBI asks for their help tracking down two mysterious serial killers: one who seems to be able to control electricity, and another who disappears from the scene of the crime in what witnesses describe as a puff of smoke. It’s enough for the Bureau to re-open the X-Files—if Mulder and Scully are willing.
They reluctantly agree, cautious about what it might mean for them and their unborn child but determined to find justice for the killers’ victims. Alien Clay
by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
From Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning author Adrian Tchaikovsky comes a far-future epic that confirms his place as a modern master of science fiction, in which a political prisoner must unlock the secrets of a strange and dangerous planet.
The planet of Kiln is where the tyrannical Mandate keeps its prison colony, and for inmates, the journey there is always a one-way trip. One such prisoner is Professor Arton Daghdev, xeno-ecologist and political dissident. Soon after arrival, he discovers that Kiln has a secret. Humanity is not the first intelligent life to set foot there.
In the midst of a ravenous, chaotic ecosystem are the ruins of a civilization, but who were the vanished builders and where did they go? If he can survive both the harsh rule of the camp commandant and the alien horrors of the world around him, then Arton has a chance at making a discovery that might just transform not only Kiln, but distant Earth as well.
This audiobook edition includes an exclusive interview between Ben Allen and Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Inversions
by Iain M Banks.
The book takes place on a fictional planet resembling Europe during the Late Middle Ages. A large empire broke up in the decade or so preceding the action, apparently from meteor or asteroid strikes that severely affected farming across much of the globe. The remnants of the empire still war with one another.
The narrative alternates chapter-by-chapter between two concurrent story-lines, with alternating chapter headings of The Doctor and The Bodyguard.

The Deluge
by Stephen Markley.
In the first decades of the 21st century, the world is convulsing, its governments mired in gridlock while a patient but unrelenting ecological crisis looms. America is in upheaval, battered by violent weather and extreme politics. In California in 2013, Tony Pietrus, a scientist studying deposits of undersea methane, receives a death threat. His fate will become bound to a stunning cast of characters–a broken drug addict, a star advertising strategist, a neurodivergent mathematician, a cunning eco-terrorist, an actor turned religious zealot, and a brazen young activist named Kate Morris, who, in the mountains of Wyoming, begins a project that will alter the course of the decades to come.
From the Gulf Coast to Los Angeles, the Midwest to Washington, DC, their intertwined odysseys unfold against a stark backdrop of accelerating chaos as they summon courage, galvanize a nation, fall to their own fear, and find wild hope in the face of staggering odds. As their stories hurtle toward a spectacular climax, each faces a reckoning: what will they sacrifice to salvage humanity’s last chance at a future? A singular achievement, The Deluge is a once-in-a-generation novel that meets the moment as few works of art ever have.
